Hair transplantation is a surgical intervention widely adopted to restore hair density in patients suffering from alopecia or baldness. A particular technique we use in our clinic is called Direct Hair Implantation (DHI), and it has stood out for its effectiveness and satisfactory aesthetic results among the various hair transplant techniques used in both men and women.
What is DHI Technique?
DHI technique is a significant advance in hair transplantation techniques, especially with regard to the process of implanting hair follicles. In this method, unlike traditional techniques such as FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation), follicular units are implanted directly into the recipient area using special needles with a reduced diameter and extremely sharp.
This is a painless treatment that allows for denser implantation, with little impact and aggression to the skin, providing a more natural effect for patients. Furthermore, with this method, it is not necessary to completely shave the hair on the head.
DHI Hair Transplant Process
The DHI hair transplant process, like the others, requires the use of local anesthesia. There are basically only two phases, one for removing the hair follicle and the other for the transplant itself, making it a faster and less invasive process.
Extraction of Follicular Units
The process begins with the extraction of follicular units from the donor area, which is usually in the posterior region of the scalp, using the FUE technique. The follicular units are carefully collected one by one, preserving their integrity and viability.
The fundamental step of hair transplantation using the DHI method is the implantation of follicular units into the recipient area. Special needles located on the Choi implanter pen, with a diameter between 0.6 mm and 1 mm, are used to create small incisions in the bald area and then the follicular units are inserted directly into these incisions.
In general, around six pens and around 15 to 16 needles are used, which have different thicknesses to fit the available follicular units.
During the implantation process, it is essential to consider the angle and distribution of the hair follicles to ensure a harmonious and natural aesthetic result. This angle generally varies between 40-45 degrees. The expert’s ability to reproduce the original hair growth pattern is crucial to achieving satisfactory results.
Advantages of DHI Technique
- The Naturalness of the Results: Since the precision of implantation of the follicular units allows an extremely natural hair growth pattern, without the appearance of transplanted hair.
- Less Trauma to the Scalp: DHI technique results in faster recovery time and less post-operative discomfort for the patient.
- Greater Hair Density: The ability to control the direction and angle of implantation allows for a denser distribution of hair follicles, enabling greater coverage of the bald area in a single transplant session.
- Lower Follicular Transection Rate: The use of sharp needles significantly reduces the follicular transection rate, preserving the integrity of the hair follicles and increasing the graft survival rate.
We can also highlight that this procedure does not require concern about tissue storage after removal of the donor area.
